Peter & Wendy – Character Breakdown

AUDITION GUIDES, SPRING 2015

Every part in this show is very important, and all contribute in different ways. Remember, there are no small parts, only small actors.

*= indicates doubled roles; e.g. if you are cast as Nana, you will also be cast in other parts. If you are cast as a mermaid, you will also be cast in other parts, etc.

Also, please note that the requirement to sing solo may mean simply one or two lines out of a group song, etc. Being willing to sing is all that is necessary.

  • J.M. Barrie (Narrator):
    • Male. Storyteller. Can read lines out of book, but should be able to do so in a very engaging way. Is on-stage pretty much the full time, but seated. He is funny, kind, and enthralled by his characters. He is ‘reading’ the story he has just written, and the action of the play is how he sees it going on in his imagination.
    • Requirements:
      • Must be a strong reader
      • Needs to be able to focus, sit still, and not get distracted by what is going on around him.
  • Peter Pan:
    • Male or Female. Traditionally in the theatre, and particularly in musicals, Peter is played by a girl. Because of the way the songs in this production are written, and because we will not be using a cable system for the flying, this part can be played by a male or female. Peter as a character is vain, wants everything to be his way, and wants to be the center of attention. He is playful, brave, and often selfish.
    • Requirements:
      • Strong reading ability
      • Ability to memorize well
      • Willing to sing solo
      • Able to act responsibly and maturely when learning, rehearsing, and performing the “sword fight” scenes
    • Note: The part of Peter includes one or two instances of either a kiss on the cheek from Wendy, or giving Wendy a kiss on the cheek (the thimble scenes)
  • Tinkerbelle:
    • Female. Tinkerbelle is a non-speaking role, but she spends a great deal of time onstage doing a lot of physical, facial, and emotional acting. She will also play a small instrument of some sort (bells on her wrists, triangle, small xylophone, etc.—one of these) as her way of ‘speaking’ is through sound/music. Tinkerbelle is a comedic role at many points in the play. She is very jealous of Wendy, and wants Peter all for herself. She does not like Wendy at all. She is protective of him because she is his fairy.
    • Requirements:
      • Able to focus & not get distracted. Non- speaking roles are incredibly important, and are often harder to play because it’s more difficult to remember your cues and stay in character the entire time.
  • The Darling Family
    • Wendy:
      • Female. Wendy is sweet, gentle, and motherly. She is fascinated by Peter, and protective of John and Michael. Peter often hurts her feelings without realizing it. Wendy and Tinkerbelle do not get along well. Wendy becomes homesick while in Neverland.
      • Requirements:
        • Strong reading ability
        • Ability to memorize well
        • Willing to sing solo
      • Note: The part of Wendy includes one or two instances of either a kiss on the cheek from Peter, or giving Peter a kiss on the cheek (the thimble scenes)
    • John
      • Male. John is a little English gentleman who wants to be a pirate. He wears/carries a top hat throughout most of the show. John is very clever, and even when he becomes part of the Lost Boys’ company, he is still a very proper young man.
      • Requirements:
        • Able to act responsibly and maturely when learning, rehearsing, and performing the “sword fight” scenes
    • Michael
      • Male. Michael is the youngest Darling child, and the youngest of all the Lost Boys, too. He is absolutely fascinated by Peter and Never Land. He doesn’t mind being the baby of the family, and has complete trust in Peter. He is slightly clingy around Peter and Wendy, wanting to be close to them.
      • Requirements:
        • Able to act responsibly and maturely when learning, rehearsing, and performing the “sword fight” scenes
    • Mr. George Darling
      • Male. Grumpy. Very focused, and does not care for imagination. Father to Wendy, John, and Michael. Husband of Mrs. Darling. Wears a tie—is seen trying to tie it onstage, but I am open to using a clip on tie or having it mostly knotted and just pulled through. Extra-loud
    • Mrs. Darling
      • Female. She is very maternal and unlike Mr. Darling, she believes in imagination. She is very anxious for her children to come back to her, and she is very, very sad and lonely when they are gone.
      • Requirements:
        • Willing to sing duet with Wendy, and/or sing solo
    • Liza*
      • Female. Liza is the Darlings’ housekeeper. She is typically seen taking care of Nana.
    • Nana*
      • Female. Nana is the Darlings’ dog who acts as Wendy, John, and Michael’s “nanny.” She does not speak, but she does bark and is responsible for some physical comedy and acting.
      • Requirements:
        • Able to “woof!”
        • Able to pay attention to cues, especially because she does not speak but must remember when exactly her movements take place

    • Slightly
      • Male or Female. Slightly likes to brag, and he wants everyone to think that he isn’t afraid of anything… even though he really is.
    • Nibs
      • Male or Female. Nibs is a bit of a tattletale and a whiner. Because of this, he gets to have a lot of fun with his lines and is a comedic character. He’s a little like the stepsisters from our fall production of Cinderella.
    • Curly
      • Male or Female. Curly is a little afraid of the pirates and is nervous when Peter isn’t around to protect him and the other Lost Boys.
      • Requirements:
    • Tip
      • Male or Female. Tip and Tap are a little younger than the other Lost Boys.  They are both happy to help wherever they’re needed and are anxious to be just as useful as the older Lost Boys.
    • Tap
      • Male or Female. Tip and Tap are a little younger than the other Lost Boys.  They are both happy to help wherever they’re needed and are anxious to be just as useful as the older Lost Boys. Tap is also the Lost Boy who is best able to translate for Tinker Bell.

    • Princess Tiger Lily
      • Female. Tiger Lily is a Native princess. In our production, she will speak but she will also use a lot of hand gestures. She is very friendly and regal, and like the other members of the Native Never Land tribe, she wants to help the Lost Boys and Peter defeat Captain Hook.
      • Requirements:

    • Captain Hook
      • Male.  Captain Hook is the villain of this story, and the actor portraying him should have fun with this fact. He is incredibly vain and he is often gloomy. He is terrified of the crocodile. He hates to be called a coward and a codfish.  He is a fierce pirate.
